Pumpkins, broccoli, and kale, oh my!

I was super excited about the kale this week. Can you believe it? Haven’t I grown? I even grabbed an extra bunch from the discard basket. Wonders never cease. I still think it smells like sweaty socks but I will gladly eat it in my soup.

Here is what we got this week:

Winter Squash
Kale
Popcorn
Celery Root
Garlic
Bok Choy
Broccoli
Leek
Carrots
Lettuce Head
Beets
Sweet potatoes
Ruby Heart Radish
Pie Pumpkin

I will happily be using the kale, leek, and celery root to make soup.

Weight Watcher’s Magazine just had a great recipe for sweet potatoes that combines two traditional dishes: cranberry sauce and sweet potato casserole. You bake the sweet potatoes and layer them with cranberry sauce in a casserole dish. I can’t wait to try it!

For now, I am going to enjoy my winter squash and pumpkin in my lovely table centerpiece.

Eventually, (you guessed it), I am making soup.

Soup is my answer to everything.

Everything except beets. I let that beet as big as my head get in my head. I haven’t been able to touch them. I need to get over it. It has been 5 weeks. Think it’s still good? It’s been living in the back of my fridge. I keep checking on it and it doesn’t smell yet. That will be my goal next week. Conquer the beets.

I had a dream that I had to give up my CSA carrots for something or other and I refused. “You don’t understand,” I told the opposing party, “these are CSA carrots, they’re not just regular carrots.” That’s how strongly I feel about these guys. They are amazing! I bet they would be super good with my buffalo dip hummus.

I am intrigued with the ruby red radish. I can’t wait to grate some over our next fancy salad or do a nice roast, perhaps with my centerpiece winter squash? We’ll see.

I just heard a great garlic tip during one of my local chef interviews. You can roast garlic, puree it, and then freeze it. The roasted garlic puree has a sweeter taste and you don’t have to worry about it going bad as fast. Stay tuned in early November for the interview and the directions.

We are coming near the end of our CSA season. I am really hoping we get some butternut squash next week to make this a really good year.
