Happy Healthy Blogger Thursday!

I am excited to introduce you to another Wisconsin blogger. I met Kelly from Brownies and Zucchini on a little Madison blogger outing earlier this year. A group of us went out together for restaurant week and I was so grateful to meet more people in the blogging community. You will meet more of these amazing women in the next few weeks.

What I admire most about Kelly is that she dedicates herself to trying new experiences and new foods. She is a self-proclaimed picky eater but she doesn’t let that get in the way of trying lots of new foods and new ways of cooking. Her adventurous spirit isn’t just limited to food, this weekend she will be running her first race ever. How cool is that?

Kelly has some great tips for starting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

So, without further adieu……

heeeeerrrreeee’s Kelly!

Hello Badger Girl readers!  I’m Kelly and I blog over at Brownies and Zucchini about my picky eating and trying to change those habits. I’m also a Madisonian, and am excited that Kimberly asked me to write a guest post.  I’d like to share with you a few things that have worked for me so far in trying to make healthier habits for myself on my journey to eat better and exercise more often.1) Make healthy food the most available.  One of the things that has really helped me to eat healthier foods on a regular basis is to always have them available.  Once I found foods that I liked I made sure that they were my only choice.  I keep healthy snacks at work and at home so that I don’t have a choice to eat something else when the time comes.  This doesn’t mean that I don’t have a treat every now and then, but generally when I’m hungry I’d rather snack on something that I already have on hand rather than making a special trip for something that I think I’d rather have.

2) Have a good support team.  My family is supportive of me making healthier changes, which is always the best place to start, but I’ve also found that my internet friends are just as powerful as motivators.  Reading blogs that create healthy recipes and are active motivates me to want to change those things in myself, and make me feel like it is possible to do.  I know I can turn to my friends on Twitter when I don’t feel like getting in a workout, or am just being plain old lazy I know they will help me pick up the pieces and get my act together to turn things around.  I also am a fan of DailyMile to track my running, and DailyChallengeto help me have healthier habits in general.  However you get it, support is essential in making healthy changes.3) Make small changes.  Big changes are not going to happen overnight.  Start small and easy to make a lasting change.  One of the first things that I did to make healthier choices was to drink more water.  I have never been good with keeping hydrated, but I never knew how much of an impact it was making until I decided to change.  At first it was a HUGE challenge to me to concentrate on drinking enough water throughout the day, but it has gotten easier and has become more of a habit.  I now know the cues my body gives me when it is dehydrated which is huge for me, and especially important since I’m trying to be more active as well.

4) Nobody is perfect.  Although at the time it might seem like making a poor food choice or not exercising the amount that you hoped for is the end of the world – its not.  People make mistakes and tomorrow is another day.  Acknowledge that you made a bad choice, learn from your mistakes, and make better choices the next time.  One of my favorite quotes of all time is “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt.  Not everyone is built to run a marathon or has the means to eat 100% local and organic foods.  Do the best for YOU, be the healthiest YOU.
