Yesterday on 60 minutes, they had a segment called Is Sugar Toxic?
You would have thought Manatee and I were at a Baptist church service. Amens and Hallelujuhs were being shouted from the couch.
Just in case you missed it, here is a link:
You should really take the time to watch this segment.
Sugar, The Legal Drug
Sugar is just as addictive as cocaine or heroin, if not more.
The more you eat, the more you have to eat to be satisfied.
Sugar isn’t just in cakes and doughnuts, check your labels for bread, ketchup, bbq sauce, marinara sauce, peanut butter, and anything labeled low-fat. I don’t know about you, but that makes me mad. If I am going to eat sugar, give me a candy bar, don’t give me a sandwich!
Sugar and Eating Clean
Since eating clean, we have cut out many hidden sugars from our diet. And you know the funny thing? Now that we don’t eat as much sugar, everything tastes so much sweeter than it did before. Kinda makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
While we do want to cut down our sugar intake, we are not going sugar-free anytime soon. Our goal with sugar is that when we eat it, we eat it on purpose. We know it’s there, we know why it’s there, and we eliminate as much as we can.

If you saw the segment, I would love to hear your thoughts. Is sugar toxic? What ways are you going to cut back on this ‘legal cocaine’?

Funny enough, my favorite chef/blogger posted about this today, too. http://shefzilla.com/?p=15823

Great minds think alike! It was really interesting. Thanks for the comment!
Yes, saw 60 Minutes…
I say lighten up! A little chocolate
every day doesn’t hurt anyone.
Next you’ll be telling me my nightly
Martini is not good! What’s this world
coming to……………
This made me laugh out loud.
I think a little chocolate now and then is fine. I think it’s concerning how pumped up other foods are with sugar that you would never guess. And I bet your nighlty martini isn’t pumped with sugar, right?
Thanks for leaving a comment.
I read a NY Times article on this – really enlightening! I try to avoid added sugar as much as possible, but it really is everywhere! I agree that things taste sweeter when you eat less added sugar. I wonder how we can shift our nation’s sweet tooth…

I need to watch this. I’ve gotten so much better with watching out for extra sugar, but I’m still eating as clean as I’d like to be!
